Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 1 Peter 5:8
The Bible tells us that our adversary is the devil, not men, not women, not government, not people who disagree with us but the rather the devil. So what does our enemy look like? That is the tricky part of identifying our adversary. In the Garden of Eden the Satan spoke to Eve through a serpent, and to Adam through Eve. Never once did they see or understand that it was Satan that was tempting or talking to them. Satan always come in disguise, sometimes in as an angel of light, and at other times He gets his words or advice to us through people in whom we trust. He often seems to care and makes us think that His plan for our life leads to fun or happiness, but Peter says that He is a roaring lion walking and seeking to devour those who He can. The answer to fighting off the adversary is to be sober, which means aware of the fight we are in and vigilant which means to be careful and on the lookout as we wander through this lion infested wilderness called the world. I am convinced that the manifestation of Satan’s work is all around us, on street corners where people are living under the influence of evil spirits seduced by drugs and ungodly sexual pleasure. It is manifest in broken homes, and shattered lives, in young people searching for meaning, acceptance and some type of hope for the future. Satan doesn’t show up as a devil with two horns and a forked tongue, matter of a fact He doesn’t show up, He comes in disguise and offers up sinful alternatives to joy and peace. His plan is to seduce you into following a path that leads to destruction. Be Sober and be vigilant, if you let down your guard, He will devour your life. Rev. Wayne Marcus
