We are approaching Memorial Day, this day set aside for us to remember those who gave their lives in active service for our country. This is a time to honor their sacrifice and, I hope, to consider the cost of our freedom. The freedom we enjoy will always be under attack by those who would love to be dictators and rule over us. Our forefathers established our country to have a government of the people and by the people. In other words, our government is to be made up of elected officials who are supposed to answer to the constituents: we don’t work for them, they work for us.
The pledge of allegiance refers to the republic of the United States of America. What is a republic? In a republic, an official set of fundamental laws, like the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights, prohibits the government from limiting or taking away certain inalienable rights of the people—even if that government was freely chosen by a majority of the people. In a pure democracy, the voting majority has almost limitless power over the minority.
This is just to serve as a reminder to you that the men and women who died in service of our country died protecting the rights of our citizenship. Please do not take these rights for granted! America was birthed out of a desire to be able to worship freely and to serve the Lord without threat of persecution. We are “ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL." Ronald Reagan said, “If we ever forget that we're one nation under God, then we will be one nation gone under.” How true these words are.
