Growing as a Christian
Growth is a natural part of life. When we place a seed in the ground, we expect it to grow, especially when it receives what it needs: water, sunshine, and proper nutrients. In the same way, when a baby is born, we expect that child to grow. With nurture and the necessities of life, growth is not merely desired; it is expected. If a baby does not grow, there are serious concerns that must be addressed.
Spiritual Growth Is Expected
The same is true for every born-again Christian. We are expected to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ and to mature as believers. If a Christian is not growing, there are spiritual concerns that need attention.
What Helps a Christian Grow?
For a new Christian to grow, several things are needed:
  • Spiritual food through the Word of God, which strengthens and builds us up.
  • A nurturing church family that offers encouragement, fellowship, and accountability.
  • Spiritual exercise through faithful service, good works, and the use of God-given gifts.
It is vitally important for Christians to feast on the Word of God. It is also imperative that they remain faithful to church, where they can find encouragement, grow alongside others, and be stirred up to do good works. Church is not only a place to receive; perhaps even more importantly, it is a place to give as God has blessed us.
Growing Day by Day
Learning to live differently from the old life—the life that has been crucified with Christ—is a process. Spiritual growth requires effort, daily discipline, and a willingness to become more like Jesus day by day.
So, whether you have been saved for a day, a week, a year, or many years, let us be committed to growing and going together until Jesus calls us home.
