For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:16

This is the first verse of the Bible that I memorized and is still one of my all-time favorites. I don’t think I have ever led anyone to Christ without quoting this verse. John 3:16 is saturated with the grace of God: as you read it, grace drips off it like sweet honey from the honeycomb. To think of an all-holy God loving a world of sinful people so very much that He would allow His only Son to go to Calvary’s cross and suffer an agonizing death to pay for our wrongdoing is unimaginable. That is the love of God - a love that is described with the words He So Loved the World that He gave His only begotten Son - what an amazing love!

So, when you think about the cost of salvation, remember it was the sacrifice of God’s only Son. When you think about the reason for the sacrifice, remember it was because we were in a state of lostness and would perish if it were not for this perfect and complete payment that God made on our behalf. What do we have to do to be saved? What is our responsibility? It is to believe, to trust in the work of God by accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior, and we do that with the faith that God gave us. Friend, our salvation is a total gift: God gave, and we received. What an amazing God we have! To Him be praise for ever and ever!
