It is election time, and there is so much division in our country over a person who is worthy to hold the high office of President. When a position comes open, it is always hard to find a candidate that you feel is worthy to fill it. There was a time when my girls were looking for suitable mates and, to be honest, no matter who they presented to the family, it was hard for me and their mom to see them as worthy to take our daughters’ hands in marriage. Yet they both did okay. In trying to fill staff positions here at church, we always look for the perfect person, a person we think will be worthy of the job that we are seeking to fill.
Today we look in chapter 5 of Revelation and see that God is looking for one who is worthy to open the seven-sealed scroll in Heaven. As we look at this passage today, we will see that this is a real task. As you know, there is only one who is worthy, which leads us to understand that there are a lot who are not worthy. That includes you and me; we fall short of being able to open a document that releases the wrath of God’s judgement on the people of the nations.
God has called me to judge right from wrong using the Word of God, but not to cast damning wrath on others when I deserved it. I am reminded when I read the Word of God that people just like me will spend eternity in Hell, paying for the same sin that I have committed. Why not me? Because I accepted Christ as my Savior and that is the only reason. Friend, my worthiness is only in Christ Jesus. I am a sinner saved by the grace of God. Jesus and His worthiness are where I get my worth from. He and He alone is Worthy.
